What pushes the price up or down

  • Height, spread and condition of the tree. Dead or diseased trees can be riskier to climb.
  • Access: trees in back gardens reached only through the house cost more.
  • Nearby buildings, power lines, roads or glasshouses that need protecting.
  • Whether timber and chip are taken away, left as logs, or chipped on site.
  • Emergency call-outs after storms are usually charged at a premium.

Hiring for tree surgery in Cork: a quick guide

Common tree surgery jobs

Crown reduction and crown thinning, crown lifting, deadwood removal, sectional felling, stump grinding and emergency work after storms are the most common jobs. Many tree surgeons also handle large hedges and site clearance.

Permissions: Tree Preservation Orders

Cork City Council and Cork County Council both make Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) to protect important trees. A tree covered by a TPO cannot be felled, topped, lopped or destroyed without the council's consent, and trees in some conservation areas have similar protection. A reputable tree surgeon will check before starting, but you can also ask the council directly.

Permissions: felling licences

Under the Forestry Act 2014, most tree felling in Ireland needs a felling licence from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. There are exemptions, including trees within 30 metres of a building, which covers most garden trees around a house. Exemptions under the Forestry Act do not override a TPO or the Wildlife Acts.

For larger sites, farmland or rows of trees, check with the Forest Service before felling.

Qualifications and insurance

Ask for evidence of public liability insurance and recognised training, such as NPTC or Lantra certificates for chainsaw and climbing work. For larger trees, ask how they will protect your property during the job.

Ash dieback

Ash dieback is widespread in Ireland. Affected ash trees can become brittle and unpredictable, so if you have a declining ash near a house, road or path, get it assessed by an arborist.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a tree surgeon cost in Cork?
Typical Irish prices are €200–€800 for pruning, €300–€600 to remove a small tree and €800–€2,000 or more for a large one. Stump grinding is usually an extra €100–€400.
Do I need permission to cut down a tree in my garden?
Usually not, if the tree is within 30 metres of a building and not protected. You do need council consent for a tree under a Tree Preservation Order, and a felling licence may be needed for trees further from buildings.
How do I know if a tree has a Tree Preservation Order?
Contact the planning department of Cork City Council or Cork County Council, depending on where you live. They hold the list of protected trees.
When is the best time to prune trees?
Most deciduous trees are best pruned in late autumn or winter when dormant. Cherries and plums are better pruned in summer to reduce disease risk.
Is stump grinding included in tree removal?
Not always. Stump grinding is often quoted separately, so ask when getting quotes.
Who is responsible for a tree that falls onto a neighbour's property?
Generally the owner of the tree, especially if it was visibly dead, diseased or damaged beforehand. Getting risky trees assessed and keeping a record is sensible. For a specific dispute, get legal advice.
Can I keep the logs?
Usually, yes. Many tree surgeons will cut timber into rings or logs and leave them for you, which can lower the price.
