What pushes the price up or down

  • Height: anything over head height needs access equipment and takes much longer.
  • Both sides and the top, or just your side? Neighbour access matters.
  • How long since the last cut. A hedge left for a year or more needs a harder first cut.
  • Species: dense leylandii and laurel take longer than privet or beech.
  • Volume of cuttings to take away.

Hiring for hedge cutting in Cork: a quick guide

When you can cut hedges in Ireland

Section 40 of the Wildlife Act 1976 makes it an offence to cut, grub, burn or destroy vegetation, including hedges, on land not then cultivated between 1 March and 31 August. The aim is to protect nesting birds.

Whether a domestic garden hedge counts is sometimes debated, but BirdWatch Ireland's position is that the ban applies to private gardens as much as to farms. Wild birds' nests are also protected. The safe approach is to plan all significant hedge cutting for September to February, and to check carefully for active nests before even a light summer trim.

There are exemptions, including works under the Roads Act 1993 where roadside hedges are a hazard. If you are unsure, ask the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Roadside hedges are your responsibility

If your hedge borders a road or footpath, the Roads Act 1993 makes the landowner responsible for keeping it from becoming a hazard. That means cutting it back from sightlines, signs and footpaths, within the permitted season unless it is a genuine safety issue.

Trimming versus reduction

A trim tidies the current season's growth and keeps shape. A reduction takes height or width off an overgrown hedge and can need a tree surgeon, a platform or a chipper, so it is priced differently.

Leylandii does not regrow from old brown wood, so cutting back too hard can leave permanent bare patches. Ask for advice before a big reduction.

Frequently asked questions

How much does hedge cutting cost in Cork?
Typical Irish prices run from about €35–€70 for a small garden hedge to €100–€220 for a tall 20–30 m hedge. Overgrown hedges needing a full cut-back can cost €200–€400 or more.
When can you cut hedges in Ireland?
The Wildlife Act restricts cutting vegetation on uncultivated land from 1 March to 31 August. BirdWatch Ireland says this applies to gardens too, so plan significant cutting for September to February.
Can I trim my garden hedge in summer?
Light trimming is common, but it is a grey area legally and you must not disturb nesting birds. Check thoroughly for nests and keep any trim light, or wait until September.
How often should a hedge be cut?
Most garden hedges need one or two trims a year. Fast growers like privet and leylandii may need two or three to stay tidy.
My neighbour's hedge overhangs my garden. Can I cut it?
Generally you can cut back branches that overhang your side, but not beyond the boundary, and the cuttings belong to the hedge owner. Talk to your neighbour first, and remember the seasonal restrictions still apply.
Do I need a tree surgeon for a tall hedge?
For hedges over roughly three metres, or where a lot of height needs to come off, a tree surgeon with the right access equipment is usually the safer choice.
Does the price include taking away the cuttings?
Usually, but not always. Ask whether green waste removal is included, especially for leylandii and laurel, which produce a lot of material.
